Effective September 18, 2017 employers must use an updated version of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.
This form has a revision date (07/17/17 N) at the bottom left-hand corner of each page. The new revision includes only slight changes to the instructions and the list of acceptable documents, existing retention and storage requirements remain.
Now that you are thinking about your onboarding process for new hires, we encourage you to perform a self-inspection to ensure you are in compliance with Form I-9 requirements including; completing the form, retention requirements, as well as storage.
You must be able to present these forms to government officials for inspection within 3 business days of a formal request.
Remember that Form I-9 contains employee personal information, so when storing these forms (regardless of the format) you should provide adequate safeguards.
