Do you know what to expect when Cal/OSHA compliance personnel arrive? Here are some of the basics you need to know to prepare for an inspection.
When compliance personnel arrive, they should provide their credentials and request permission to conduct a site inspection. It’s a good idea to train front desk staff regarding what to do when an inspector arrives, namely who from management to notify.
The process starts with an opening conference. At this time Cal/OSHA inspectors will explain the general purpose and scope of the inspection. They will want to walk around your worksite, and it’s a good idea to have a management representative accompany the inspector at all times. They will most likely ask for documentation, such as a copy of your Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), this usually doesn’t need to be provided immediately—but within a given timeframe.
The inspector may want to interview employees and should conduct an exit conference. During this discussion, you will be informed of any violations observed during the visit. The last item to expect is a closing conference, you will be notified of when this is scheduled by the compliance department.
