Most California public agencies are familiar with the current struggle to recruit and retain employees, and law enforcement departments are faced with an even bigger hurdle. In fact, this nationwide issue was the reason the US Attorney General requested a meeting be held last April to examine strategies and promising practices around recruitment and retention. As a result of this meeting, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services released Recruitment and Retention for the Modern Law Enforcement Agency. This report reflects the recommendations identified by the approximately 30 law enforcement and community leaders in attendance.
Agencies should review the solutions and recommendations to see if any may be suitable for your local law enforcement.
