Safety Management Certification Training: Developing Effective Control Measures

Course description:

The course consists of:

  • 1 Zoom guided discussion; 1:30 minutes
  • Homework assignment
  • End-of-course exam

Pre-Course Requirement:

Students who have completed “Safety Management: What is it?”

  • Bring their completed loss analysis homework assignment to class.

Certification requirements:

  • The homework assignment must be completed and turned in to the instructor.
  • The homework assignment must meet the standards outlined in the course learning objectives.
  • The homework assignment must be evaluated and accepted by the instructor before students are eligible to take the end-of-course exam.
  • Students must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the end-of-course exam.
  • Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.
  • Students who successfully complete all 5 SMCT courses are eligible to take the final Certification Exam. The Certification Exam is a comprehensive exam that measures the students’ knowledge of the learning objectives from all five courses.

  • Explain loss analysis terms
  • Explain how to use loss analysis to prevent future losses
  • Explain the importance of looking at multiple loss exposures from a single loss source
  • Explain how to triage risk control efforts
  • Explain the Hierarchy of Controls
  • Explain how to apply the Hierarchy of Controls when developing effective controls
  • Explain the need to set goals and determine return on investment (ROI) when communicating with senior management
  • Explain how to create an Executive Summary
  • Explain how to be a problem solver and actively seek an audience

Homework:

  • Students conduct a loss analysis of a Public Safety Department’s Workers’ Compensation loss report.
  • Students prepare a report for their supervisor.
  • These actions must be covered in the report:
    • Assess the hazards.
    • Determine where and how to find additional information related to the hazards.
    • Develop effective control measures.
    • Determine the required resources, costs, and return on investment (ROI).
    • Set goals and explain how performance will be measured.
    • Determine the key personnel that must be involved in the process.
    • Describe how you will communicate the control measures to management and the work force.

End-of-Course Exam:

  • The end-of-course exam measures the students’ knowledge of the course learning objectives.
  • The exam consists of 20 true/false questions.
