Announcing New Driver Training Program
The EIA has partnered with TargetSolutions to provide members with an interactive online driving program. The program consists of a competency-based assessment and twelve skill-building courses, and is offered to EIA members at no additional cost.
New Industrial Classroom Safety Management Resource
The Labor Occupational Health Program of UC Berkeley released a new resource for school administrators and teachers. Use it to reduce the risk of student and employee injuries in industrial classrooms such as woodworking, automotive technology, and robotics.
Legislative Update
SB188 – The first bill of the legislative season affecting schools was filed with the Secretary of State last month. SB188 amends Education Code Section 212.1 and Government Code Section 12926. The bill extends workplace and school discrimination protections to cover race-related traits, including hair texture and hairstyles (e.g., braids, locks, and twists). The bill is effective January 1, 2020. Additional details may be found here.
 
AB272 – Another early bill filed in July was AB272, which adds section 48901.7 to the Education Code. This bill allows school districts to adopt a policy limiting or prohibiting student use of smart phones at a school site or when students are under the supervision and control of the school district. The bill dictates circumstances that a district cannot prohibit cell phone usage (e.g. emergencies, perceived threat of danger, etc.). The bill is effective January 1, 2020.
