Our new Risk Simplified will help your district understand the requirements prescribed in AB-2009. The bill requires districts to develop an emergency action plan for interscholastic events and activities. It also requires districts to make available at least one automated electronic defibrillator (AED) during interscholastic events and activities.
School districts must comply with the new requirements by July 1, 2019.
Disclosing Students’ Personal Identifying Information to SROs or Threat Assessment Teams
In February, the Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) updated its guidance document about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This document consists of thirty-seven commonly asked questions about school districts’ responsibilities under FERPA relating to disclosures of student information to school resource officers (SROs), threat assessment teams, and law enforcement units.
We recommend that our education members periodically review their existing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with FERPA.

Safety Talk of the Month: Avoid Shortcuts
This month’s suggested safety talk is about avoiding shortcuts. Ask your directors of classified staff to deliver this short in-person training to their departments. Although less effective than face-to-face delivery, it can also be emailed or inserted into paycheck envelopes. Over 100 additional topics are available in our Safety Talks compendium. Please contact the Risk Control Department for password information to access the complete resource.
