Property Program Grant Deadline Extended

There's still time to apply for the Property Program Grant for risk control projects! The grant includes up to $25k per Property Program member, per year on a matching basis. Use these funds to reduce exposures associated with the Property Program. How about protecting vacant buildings with these matching funds? Other ways to use the funds are hazard inspections, other risk identification evaluations on specific locations, or implementation of security measures such as alarm system installation.

The deadline has been extended to November 15 to submit applications to the EIA’s Risk Control Department. Check out the FAQ’s and don’t hesitate to contact us.

Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and Guide and Webcast

In January 2020, the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse will go into effect. The EIA has put together a guide for employers with information about the Clearinghouse, which is a database maintained by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to record all drug and alcohol testing violations. The guide will inform employers of the reporting and query requirements of the Clearinghouse.

Public Entity Meeting: Still Time to Register

Register today for the Annual Public Entity Membership Meeting! There are two locations to choose from: Northern California on November 6th at the EIA headquarters in Folsom, and in Southern California on November 7th in Ontario.

POST Releases AB 392: Use of Force Standards Video

AB 392 was signed into law on August 19 and becomes effective January 1, 2020. The bill amends Penal Code 196 and 835a, it will change legal standards for California peace officers’ use of force, including justifiable homicide and deadly force.

The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) has developed various resources to assist agencies with understanding and preparing for the changes. This includes a video titled, AB 392: California’s New Use of Force Standards: What You Need to Know. The video is an overview of the new law and includes helpful analysis from several district attorneys involved with POST. It should help your agency understand the new law as it relates to the actions of peace officers in use of force situations, provide a perspective of how district attorneys will look at cases in the context of these changes, and address some of the questions that have arisen since this law was passed.
